Great soft skin doesn’t have to involve pricey products, expensive surgeries or hopes of miracle. They say that skin is the largest organ on our body. So what can you do to keep it healthy and youthful-looking for as long as possible? Here are a few easy tips to getting smooth, glowing summer skin!
1. Get enough Sleep. The concept of beauty sleep is not just an old wives tale. Experts say that sleep does affect your skin and has a variety of benefits. Skincare products have their maximum effectiveness at night due to the fact that their most powerful ingredients loose their potency in the sun. Sleep also promotes cell regeneration and cleans up daily damage
2. Wear sunscreen. Wear sunscreen even on cloudy days. Choose a gentle, non-irritating lotion helps reflect sun’s damaging rays. See our post on choosing the correct sunscreen for more info.
3. Drink plenty of water – stay hydrated. Drinking water moisturizes your skin from the inside out and can help clear up your skin. It will not happen overnight but replacing one sugary drink with a glass of water will help improve your skin. To make sure you are getting enough water everyday carry water with you in a bottle where ever you go. You can keep one in your purse, in your car or even go hands-free with a SWIH!
4. Reduce the bad stuff… If you want good skin then you will need to quit smoking right away.. Smoking can have an extremely adverse effect on your skin. Research projects have shown that smoking actually causes dehydration of the skin and speeds up the process of ageing. Also, moderate amounts of alcohol will not cause damage to the skin. Excessive amounts however, can have detrimental effects. Alcohol dilates the blood vessels in the skin. Every time you have a drink, the blood vessels will dilate and remain permanently dilated until they lose their tone. Excessive drinking will lead to the development of chronic dilation of the capillaries and a permanent flush on the face.
5. Eat good food. You are what you eat! The healthier the foods are that you consume, the better your skin will look. Eat blueberries and other fruits with rich color, which are full of antioxidants. Deep red, yellow and green vegetables are also good. One the most important components of skin health is vitamin A. One of the best places to get it is low-fat dairy products. Also, add some Salmon, Walnuts, Canola Oil, and Flax Seed to your diet. These all contain essential fatty acids, and are key foods for healthy, beautiful skin.
6. Avoid bad food. Reduce the amount of salt or sodium in your diet. Salt causes tissues to swell and the subsequent deflating results in less elastic skin. Processed meats are another type of food to avoid. The preservatives can deplete the moisture in your skin, leaving it looking dull. All types of candy and junk foods can really take a toll on your skin as well.
7. Exfoliate! Exfoliating your skin will help it to look healthy and radiant. Removing the top layer of dead cells, you will make your skin appear smoother and less wrinkled.
